Workshop on opportunities and challenges for contaminated sites management and remediation, which was a branch session of the 9th International Conference on Waste Management and Technology (ICWMT 9), was successfully held in Beijing, China in the morning of October 30, 2014. More than 40 participants, including leaders of local government departments and representatives from industry attended the workshop.

The workshop was presided over by Dr. Xiaofei Sun from Basel Convention Regional Centre for Asia and the Pacific (BCRC Beijing), leaders of contaminated site management departments of local government from Tianjin, Jingmen (Hubei province), representatives from industry related to contaminated site remediation（such as GeoEnviron Engineering Technology, Inc., Beijing constriction engineering group, and Qingdao New World） participated and reported on the workshop. Reporters introduced current status and problems of contaminated site management in local government, as well as opportunities and challenges for contaminated sites remediation industry in China. Heated discussions on contaminated sites management policy, site remediation technology and practice, financing mechanism for remediation and other related issues were organized.
