ICWMT8

The 8th International Conference on Waste Management and Technology was held in Shanghai on October 23-25, 2013. Totally more than 500 delegates from 28 countries and regions who were in research institutes, enterprises and government departments attended the conference. In line with the spirit of "Maximize Recycling of Waste, Protect the Environment, Promote the Construction of Ecological Civilization", the theme of ICWMT8 is "Towards Ecological Civilization". This conference was hosted by Key Laboratory for Solid Waste Management and Environment Safety, Ministry of Education of China, Tsinghua University, Center of Solid Waste and Chemical Management Technology, United Nations Environment Programme, Management Committee of Shanghai Jinqiao Economic & Technological Development Zone, Shanghai Jinqiao (Group) Co. Ltd, China Technology Innovation Strategic Alliance for Resources Recycling Industry, Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Sciences, Research Institute of Solid Waste Management, and Stockholm Convention Regional Centre for Capacity-building and the Transfer of Technology in Asia and the Pacific, and organized by Basel Convention Regional Centre for Asia and the Pacific, Society of Solid Waste of Chinese Society for Environmental Sciences, Shanghai Xin Jinqiao Environmental Protection Co., Ltd. and State Environmental Protection Engineering Center for the Recycle Informatization and Treatment of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment. 
     Prof. Jinhui Li, Executive Director of Basel Convention Regional Centre for Asia and the Pacific, chaired the opening ceremony, and gave welcome address on behalf of Prof. Jiming Hao, Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, Institute of Environmental Science and Engineering, Tsinghua University. Mr. Bin Zhong, Director of Division of Solid Waste Management, Department of Pollution Prevention and Control, Ministry of Environmental Protection, Mr. Qizhou Wu, Vice Director General, Shanghai Municipal Environment Protection Bureau, Mr. Nelson Sabogal, Senior Program Officer, Secretariat of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions, Mr. Jianzhong Pan, Deputy Secretary of the CPC Committee, Shanghai Jinqiao (Group) Co., Ltd. gave opening remarks at the opening ceremony of the conference. Mr. Jiang Ling, Director General of Center of Solid Waste and Chemical Management Technology, Mr. Bin Zhong, Mr. Tieyong Zuo, Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, and Mr. Ning Duan, Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering made keynote speeches on Solid Waste Management Policy and Strategy respectively. Mr. Eisa Mohamed Nageeb Abdalla, UNIDO Representative and Regional Director in South Africa, Mr. Paul H. Brunner, Professor of Vienna University of Technology, Mr. Fernando Lugris, Chair of Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee on Mercury, Ms. Wenchao Zang, Director of Division of Chemicals Management, Department of Pollution Prevention and Control, Ministry of Environmental Protection of China, together with 44 well-known experts and scholars home and abroad gave wonderful presentations on International Development of Chemicals and Waste Management, Solid Waste Life Cycle Management, Resource recovery, Utilization and Disposal, Resource Utilization on Biomass and Household Waste, E-Waste Management Policy and Technology, and Management and Sound Disposal of Hazardous Waste, Industrial and Construction Waste, and Mercury Waste. 
     Relying on the Conference, Workshop on Hazardous Waste Disposal Facilities Construction, Accreditation and Operation, Workshop on E-waste Treatment Technology, Workshop on the Amendment of Technical Policies of Pollution Prevention and Control for Waste Household Appliances and Electronic Products, Workshop on Technic Manual for Audit of Type and Amount of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment, Regional Trade Symposium on Promotion of Technical Assistance and Technology Transfer in Asia and the Pacific, Basel Forum in Asia-Pacific Region on Promotion of Basel Convention Implementation, was also held back-to-back. In addition, technical field trip of Waste Plastic Recovery, Hazardous Waste Incineration and E-waste Treatment was arranged during the conference. 
    The conference was closed on October 25 successfully. During the Closure Ceremony, Ms. Huatian Zhang, Vice Director, Division of Environmental Technology Guidance, Department of Science, Technology and Standards, Ministry of Environmental Protection of China, Mr. Hao Quan, Honorary Chairman of the Society of Solid Waste of Chinese Society for Environmental Science, and Mr. Shigang Zhang, United Nations Environment Programme gave closing speech and other distinguished guests awarded for 15 Excellent Papers authors.
      The International Conference on Waste Management and Technology has become a platform of great importance which elaborates scientific ideas, demonstrates advanced experience, discusses environmental issues, and finds solutions for solid waste management and technology. Since 2005, the conference has been successfully held for the eight times, and become one of the significant international conferences in the field of solid waste.
