Development of On-board Intelligent Processing Technology for Remote Sensing Satellites

On-board intelligent processing technology for remote sensing satellites refers to the intelligent processing of data obtained from sensors such as optical and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) to complete the on-board extraction of areas of interest and target detection or recognization. The application of this technology can effectively reduce the data transmission pressure from remote sensing satellites to ground stations and shorten the delay in information acquisition for end-users. Consequently, the application efficiency of remote sensing satellites in fields such as emergency disaster reduction and national security could be effectively enhanced.

Firstly, this report elaborates on the connotation and significance of on-board intelligent processing technology for remote sensing satellites. It further introduces recent development trends of this technology internationally. Moreover, it discusses the challenges, solution approaches, and research progress in China regarding on-board processing technology for optical and SAR satellites. Finally, this report provides a forecast for the future development of this technology.

Liang Chen is a professor and a Ph.D. Supervisor in Beijing Institute of Technology. He is the deputy director of the National Key Laboratory of Science and Technology on Space-Born Intelligent Information Processing. He is also a holder of the National Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars. His research is interested in the real-time processing of remote sensing information. As the principal leader or core researcher, he has undertaken over ten projects, including the National Natural Science Foundation of China projects, 863 programs, pre-research projects, and critical models’ tasks. He has received two Second Prizes in the National Technological Invention Award, one ministerial first-class invention award, and two first-class scientific and technological progress awards. He has published more than 30 papers and is a holder of dozens of national invention patents. He also serves as an expert in a professional group for artificial intelligence applications, Vice Chairman of China Hi-Tech Industrialization Association Intelligent Information Processing Industrialization Branch, a member of the Optical Remote Sensing Professional Committee of the China Society of Remote Sensing Applications, and a council member of the China Ocean Engineering Consulting Association.
