To promote sharing scientific achievements, researching the latest technology, discovering policy trends, strengthening exchanges and cooperation in industrie among domestic and international government officials, experts, and other stakeholder in the field of solid waste environment management, resource utilization and disposal, approved by Ministry of Environmental Protection of China, with the support of National Center of Solid Waste Management, the 4th International Conference on Waste Management and Technology was convened by Basel Convention Coordinating Center for Asia and the Pacific (BCRC China) in Tsinghua University, Beijing, China during Nov. 18-20th, 2009.

Mr. Li Xinmin from the Deputy Director General of Department of Pollution Prevention and Control, Ministry of Environmental Protection, China, Prof. Yu Gang, the Chairman of Department of Environmental Science and Engineering, Tsinghua University, and Mr. Quan Hao, the Director of the Solid Waste Branch of Chinese Society for Environmental Sciences, delivered welcoming address on the opening ceremony. Dr.Hu Hualong, National Center of Solid Waste Management, and Prof. Li Jinhui, the executive secretary of Basel Convention Coordinating Centre for Asia and the Pacific, chaired the Panel Discussion "The Implementation and Prospects of WEEE" and Plenary Report on Solid Waste Management. 21 renowned domestic and foreign experts and scholars, for example, Prof. Nie Yongfeng from the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering, Tsinghua University, and Prof. Fumikazu Yoshida form the School of Public Policy, Hokkaido University, Japan, have given plenary reports on Treatment and Recycling Technology of E-Waste waste and Other Waste, Hazardous Waste and Hazardous Chemicals Management and Technology, etc.

Furthermore, in order to solve the outstanding problem in E-waste and hazardous waste management and disposal in China, the conference specially arranged three panel discussions, "The Implementation and Prospects of WEEE", " E-Waste" Hazardous Waste Treatment Industrial Development". The Panel Discussions provided a platform for government officials, experts and industry professionals in the field of domestic and international solid waste management and technology to exchange and cooperate extensively. On the afternoon of November 20th, the conference arranged technical field trip for the participants. The two visiting lines are The enterprises are Beijing Eco-island Science & Technology Co.,Ltd and TES-AMM (Beijing) China on e-waste recycling, which are leaders of hazardous waste and E-waste disposal industries in China respectively.

More than 170 representatives from domestic and international university institutes, governments, research institutes and industry attended the conference. The Conference provided an important platform for persons in the field of solid waste management and technology to discuss scientific problems, to exchange experiences, and to find innovative solution and cooperative opportunities. Based on the active participation of the delegates, the 4th International Conference on Waste Management and Technology has acquired plentiful and substantial achievements. The Conference has received 70 abstracts, 42 papers and 53 presentations totally. During the three-day international conference, through plenary reports and discussions, reception dinner, and technical field trip and other activities, the participants not only discussed the hot issues in the field of solid waste management and technology, but established new friendships and contacts which laid good foundation for exchanges and cooperation for the future.

The conference set up Best Paper Award. The external examiners selected best papers and submitted them to the steering committee for re-examination. The results will be published on the website. The conference will recommend best papers to the Environmental Engineering Science. The softcopy proceeding of the conference has been completed. If necessary, please contact with the conference.
