The 5th International Conference on Waste Management and Technology was held in Tsinghua University during December 15-17, 2010. This conference was hosted by Tsinghua University, Solid Waste Branch of Chinese Society for Environmental Sciences and Stockholm Convention Regional Centre for Capacity-building and the Transfer of Technology in Asia and the Pacific, and organized by Basel Convention Basel Convention Coordinating Centre for Asia and the Pacific- BCRC China. More than 350 delegates from universities, research and academic institutions, government departments and industries in 34 countries attend the conference.

Mr. Li Xinmin, Deputy director general of Department of Pollution Prevention and Control, Ministry of Environmental Protection of the People's Republic of China, Ms. Katharina Kummer Peiry, Executive secretary of Secretary of the Basel Convention, Prof. Hao Jiming, from Institute of Environmental Science and Engineering, Tsinghua University, and Mr. Quan Hao Director of the Solid Waste Branch of Chinese Society for Environmental Sciences made speeches on the ceremony. 43 famous experts and scholars all over the world made plenary speeches on Solid waste management and treatment technology, E-waste and biomass energy waste management and treatment technology such as Mr Du Kexiong from Office of Solid Waste Management, Department of Pollution Prevention and Control, MEP China, Prof. Fumikazu Yoshida, School of Public Policy, Hokkaido University.

This conference had 4 main fields, E-waste, hazardous waste, municipal sludge and household garbage. In order to promote the communication of solid waste management technology and policies study in Asia and the Pacific, the conference arranged Solid waste industry in Asia Development Forum, E-waste projects and issues at the regional level，The development and focus of e-waste technology in China and E-waste plenary speeches. Meanwhile Seminar of Capacity-building and Awareness-raising Workshop on Environmentally Sound Management (ESM) of Asbestos Waste in Asia and the Pacific and Sino-US environmental cooperation hazardous waste management and Industry Forum supplied platforms for the experts from national and international solid waste management and technology research fields to communicate, exchange and cooperate with others. All papers accepted would be published by Scientific Research Publishing and indexed by ISTP, and each paper will have a separate ISBN number. There are totally 155 papers and 62 reports accepted by the 5th ICWMT. At the same time, there was an exhibition of enterprises, which attracted 9 famous domestic and overseas enterprises to participate. The variety of interactive sessions had promoted the industry and enterprises on technology exchange, with lots of participants participating and exchanging the opinions in E-waste and hazardous waste treatment and management. Prof. Wang Hongtao and Associate Professor Lu Wenjing took part in the plenary report and host. More than 40 students from College of Environmental Sciences and Engineering Tsinghua University attended the conference and submitted 18 papers.

The 3rd Meeting of the Partnership for action on Computing Equipment (PACE) was back to back with the 5th ICWMT held on 13th to 15th December. Moreover, Capacity-building and Awareness-raising Workshop on Environmental Sound Management (ESM) of Asbestos Waste in Asia and the Pacific was held combined with the 5th ICWMT, on 16-17th December, 2010. And the Sino-US Environmental Cooperation Hazardous Waste Management and Industry Seminar will be held on the afternoon of 16th December.

To promote the knowledge and experience exchanges among the international experts, and to enhance the technology cooperation among the nations, The International Conference on Waste Management and Technology is held annually in Tsinghua University, Beijing, organized by Basel Convention Coordinating Center for Asia and the Pacific (BCRC China). The conference set the steering committee and the industry expert committee including 48 experts from worldwide solid waste management, technology research and industrial fields. The chairman of the steering committee is Prof. Hao Jiming, from Institute of the Environmental Science and Engineering, Tsinghua University and the chairman of the 5th ICWMT is Prof. Li Jinhui, executive secretary of BCRC China.
