Images in Writing and Teaching Architectural History

Architectural images, whether of drawings or photographs, have been regarded as an integral part of most architectural history books. In times when resources were scarce, such as when we had few books other than Fletcher's History of Architecture in China, images in a handful of books were embraced and relied upon as factual and trustworthy sources for studying the architectural history of different periods and regions. Clear drawings depicting plans, sections, facades and three-dimensional representations were highly valued especially among teachers and students, as they make architecture from diverse and mostly inaccessible locations recognizable.

With the current abundance and diversity of architectural images available, whether in history books, monographs, magazines, or the vast online resources, we have also grown more aware of the complex relationship between these visual representations and actual buildings, as well as the design ideas they convey. Thus, it is crucial to reflect on the kinds of architectural images we use and how we incorporate them in teaching and writing architectural history.

This symposium aims to bring together teachers and scholars with their experiences in architectural pedagogy and research on architectural history. Through discussions on the issue of architectural images in teaching and writing architectural history, we shall primarily address challenges arising from diverse cultures, such as in the courses on history of western architecture or on a global history of architecture. Scholars beyond the realm of architectural history are also encouraged to participate and contribute, sharing their research experiences and critical insights to broaden our perspectives on this subject.

We propose four subtopics to serve as reference points for calling papers and abstracts from scholars and Ph.D. students interested in participating in this symposium:

1. Images in Architectural Historians' Writings

What kinds of images have architectural historians employed in their writings? Through the examination of various history books, we expect to have a concise overview of the history of architectural images. Building on this foundation, we seek to cultivate a consciousness on how historians source and select images, with what intentions and approaches they constructed these symbiotic relationships between images and texts, and if there are any tensions between words and images. Given that images in history books are presented sequentially, we'll explore how historians arrange them to trace the “evolution” of architecture.

2. Images in Teaching history of Architecture

As architectural images increasingly find their way into classrooms, the multisource materials available for learning architectural history have grown richer yet more chaotic than ever before. How could we rethink our teaching methods in this new condition? More concretely, how can we explore images, discern them, and more consciously investigate the contexts and intentions behind their creation and dissemination? Moreover, how can we effectively use these images, appropriately interpret them, and establish significant connections both among themselves and between them and textural narratives?

3. Images as Architectural Design Ideas or Thinking

Many architectural images serve not merely as representations of buildings but also as vehicles for architects' ideas, design thinking, ideal models, or even manifestos. When historians focus on the history of architectural ideas and theories, they broaden their perspectives to encompass images from diverse fields and disciplines. How do we delineate the boundaries of architectural images, and how can we undertake interdisciplinary studies to enhance our understanding of architecture's cultural history within a comprehensive context?

4. Architectural Drawings as Autonomous Objects

As the boundaries of architecture continue to shift, certain architectural drawings or images have transcended their role as mere means of construction and gained autonomy beyond the building process. This phenomenon was not only prevalent since 1960s but can be traced back to those imaginative drawings more than two centuries ago. We expect to examine the architectural drawings that have been produced as autonomous objects, understanding the creators, the intended audience, the production methods, and the ways they were interpreted. We shall also explore the impact these drawings have had on our perception and understanding of architecture, and discuss how they should be integrated into the teaching and writing of architectural history.
