Symposium 9: Sample Processing and Separation

Processing and separation of biological samples are indispensable in disease diagnostics, chemical and biological assays. For instance, malaria diagnosis relies on the separation of parasite-infected red blood cells (RBCs) from the uninfected counterparts. Separation of neuronal cells has gained a great deal of interest due to its potential applications in cell replacement therapy of neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases. Cell separation is also vital for the isolation of nucleated RBCs (NRBCs) from the peripheral blood of pregnant women to monitor maternal, foetal, and neonatal health. Sorting blood cells into different subpopulations is a crucial step for blood storage and transfusion. Besides, isolation of circulating tumour cells (CTCs) from peripheral blood of cancer patients has been emerging as a real-time non-invasive “liquid biopsy” approach for cancer diagnosis and prognosis, drug screening and personalized therapy. This symposium will gather domestic and international experts to talk about their recent study in the field of sample processing and separation.
