Kunming, the capital city of Yunnan Province located in southwest of China is the well-known “city of eternal spring” due to its perpetual mild weather. Today the city is the political, economical and cultural center of Yunnan and the provincial center for transport, science and technology, and also consequently has become the most popular center for tourism in China. It covers an area of 21,473 square kilometers, where lives about 6.4 million people. Serving as a transportation hub in Southwest China, and linking by rail to Vietnam and by road to Burma, Laos and Thailand, Kunming turns to an inland port for Southeast and South Asia.
Located at an elevation of 1,890 meters (6,200 feet) with low latitude and high elevation, Kunming has one of the mildest climates in China. With its perpetual spring-like weather which provides the ideal climate for plants and flowers, Kunming is known as the "City of Eternal Spring". The city is covered with blossoms and lush vegetation all-year round. Due to the advantage of weather, Kunming has developed into the largest flower export base in Asia.
Kunming's history goes back thousands of years. The city obtained fame during Ming dynasty because of Kunming's ready supply of metals, the main source for Ming coins. Also a large center of trade, the city nonetheless remained relatively isolated from the rest of China. Kunming has a unique culture consisting of splendid cultural heritage of multiple nationalities. Since ancient times, people in the region have engraved painting on precipices and on bronze wares. They depicted their rich feelings and beliefs through characters and paintings.
"Dongba" (the highly educated man) culture of Naxi Nationality and its "Dongba Scripture", the earliest hieroglyph existing in the world, is indications that the plateau had once been cut off from the outside world. The culture of Dai Nationality is symbolized by its unique "Beiye Scripture", Buddhist temples of different sizes, the Jingzhen Octagon Pavilion, and the Manfeilong White Temple. Every nationality has its unique way of cultural expression, such as the New Year Song Festival of the Tibetan Nationality, Munao Mass Song and Dance Festival of Jingbo, the Three-Pagoda Building in Dali and the Golden Palace built mainly out of copper.
Holiday celebrations, religions, rites, weddings, burials, and people's daily lives have all been imbued with the strong cultural color of different nationalities. Inspired by these activities, people have created a variety of arts characteristic of their national background, including construction, engraving, knitting, wax printing, embroidery, song and dance, paintings, poems and legends.
Kunming is also renowned for many delicious local dishes, which combines cooking styles of other cities and nationalities outside Kunming. Cross-bridge rice noodle is a special dish of YN. As the roast duck of Beijng, the cake particles in mutton soup of Xi’an, if you visit YN, you must taste Cross-bridge rice noodle.
