Dr. Jie Li, professor, Director of Department of Scientific Research Management Guang’anmen Hospital, China Academy of Chinese Medicine Sciences. Dr. Li obtained his MD degree from Chengde Medical College, P. R. China in1994. He subsequently finished his master study at China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences and later got his Ph.D. degree from Beijing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Dr. Li joined the department of oncology, Guang’anmen Hospital, China Academy of Chinese Medical Science in 1997 and now he is a professor and Postgraduates mentor. He has been engaged in clinical study and basic research with Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) combined with western medicine, especially on improving the patient’s quality of life by reducing the side effects of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. His research work focused on the mechanism of TCM immunoregulatory effect on tumor, which was supported by grants from National Natural Science Foundation of P.R. China.
Dr. Li has been working as a postdoctoral visiting fellow at NCI-Frederick from January 2007 to December 2008. His research is to investigate the immunoregulatory effect of anti-tumor Chinese herb medicine Sheng Qi Formula (SQF) and its cellular and molecular mechanism. The research is co-supported by office of Cancer Complementary and Alternative Medicine of NCI/NIH and China Academy of Chinese Medical Science. Through two years’ study Dr. Li has demonstrated that combining SQF with either gemcitabine or cyclophosphamide can markedly enhanced anti-tumor efficacy compared with the chemotherapeutic drugs alone, and herbal medicine has potent effects on tumor-induced myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) in host immunity and provides a novel approach in cancer treatment. During postdoctoral training, Dr. Li got outstanding poster presentation (Travel award) in 8th Annual NCI/CCR-FRI colloquium, On March, 2008 Ocean City, MD and Student/Post-doctoral Fellow Travel Award in 41st Annual Meeting of the Society for Leukocyte Biology, On November 6-8, 2008, Denver, Colorado, USA.
