Biography:

Danica Kragic is a Professor at the School of Computer Science and Communication at the Royal Institute of Technology, KTH. She received MSc in Mechanical Engineering from the Technical University of Rijeka, Croatia in 1995 and PhD in Computer Science from KTH in 2001. She has been a visiting researcher at Columbia University, Johns Hopkins University and INRIA Rennes. She is the Director of the Centre for Autonomous Systems. Danica received the 2007 IEEE Robotics and Automation Society Early Academic Career Award. She is a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences and Young Academy of Sweden. She holds a Honorary Doctorate from the Lappeenranta University of Technology. She chaired IEEE RAS Technical Committee on Computer and Robot Vision and served as an IEEE RAS AdCom member. Her research is in the area of robotics, computer vision and machine learning. In 2012, she received an ERC Starting Grant. Her research is supported by the EU, Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research and Swedish Research Council. She is an IEEE Fellow.

Talk Title: An Ultralight Humanoid Robotic Arm is Opening the Door to Everyday Robots

Abstract:

Everyday robots are expected to have feet/AGV or four-legged robot-dog, eyes/cameras, ears/mic(s), a mouth/speaker and arms/robotic arms, which are assembled no larger than an adult. In particular, this requires humanoid robotic arms that are capable of manipulating most everyday objects. Besides, performing everyday manipulation tasks successfully requires ability of everyday robots to appropriately account for the physical behavior step of task completion. Meaning that everyday robots have to plan their manipulation sequences before start. This talk will introduce our most advanced humanoid robotic arm, RM75 series. To build an ultra-lightweight robotic arm, we delicately develop new core components including controller, driver, motor and harmonic reducer. They are compact but have even more strength. They weight 7.2kg or 16.5lbs with the controller inside its body, and are able to move up to 10.0kg or 22.1lbs. Moreover, our RM75/RM65 has a human-like arm which allows users to control it by human arms. To manipulate everyday objects by our RM75 using such as voice interaction, we propose a general-purpose-robot (GPR) system that can understand user’s voice interaction and react precisely to user’s intention. This drives our dedication to the destination of introducing reliable and affordable butler robots to our everyday life. We test our GPR system at a household scenario and shows inspiring performance than we ever expected.  

Biography: 

Dr. Bo Wu is the Head of the AI Lab in RealMan company, Beijing, China. Before that, he was a post-doctoral researcher at Toronto Metropolitan University, Toronto, Canada. During the same period, he worked at a scientific researcher position at the Human and Computer Interface (HCI) research center in Huawei, Markham, Canada. Dr. Bo Wu received his Ph.D. from Auburn University, USA in 2018. He is also an IEEE member and serves as a reviewer of multiple IEEE journals, including IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics and IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks and Learning Systems, etc. His research interests include robot vision and acoustics, artificial intelligence, AIoT, etc.

Talk Title: Space Debris Propagation, Prediction, and Removal

Abstract:

The skies above us are becoming increasingly cluttered with space debris, threatening the safety of our satellites, astronauts, and future space missions. In this talk, we will explore the cutting-edge research being done to address this critical challenge and pave the way for a safer, more sustainable space environment. We will begin by introducing the Modified Chebyshev-Picard Iteration Methods, a set of parallel-structured methods for solving initial and boundary value problems. These methods have been recommended as a promising and parallelizable approach for orbit propagation by the National Research Council. We will then highlight our recent results in developing a physics-based learning approach to predict space objects' trajectories with higher accuracy and reliability than current methods, offering new collision avoidance and debris mitigation opportunities. Finally, we will present our research in autonomous, performance-driven, and online trajectory planning of space robotics for debris removal, which has the potential to revolutionize the field of space debris remediation. Our work represents a major step forward in addressing the challenges posed by the growth of space debris and ensuring the safety and sustainability of our activities in space.

Biography: 

Dr. Xiaoli Bai is a leading expert in the field of astrodynamics and space robotics, with a focus on spacecraft guidance, control, and navigation. As an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, she actively researches and develops new technologies to advance our understanding of these critical areas of space exploration. Dr. Bai is a recipient of numerous awards and recognitions, including the 2019 NASA Early Career Faculty Award, the 2016 Air Force Office of Scientific Research Young Investigator Research Program award, the Outstanding Young Aerospace Engineer Award from Texas A&M University in 2018, and the A. Water Tyson Assistant Professor Award from Rutgers in 2018. She is also an Associate Fellow for the Class of 2021 in the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) and a recipient of the prestigious Amelia Earhart Fellowship. Dr. Bai's work has contributed significantly to our understanding of the challenges and opportunities presented by space exploration, and her expertise is sought after by colleagues and collaborators around the world.
